I love the forgotten tales of awesome women and my favorite are all the really old ones, I have a soft spot for women who became pirates too like Ching Shih and Gráinne Mhaol, while hugely important in their own right maybe can’t be said to have changed the whole world? Change the world is a huge ask……
One of my favorites who surely does deserve the ‘world changing’ title is Shajar al-Durr.
Shajar started life as a slave somewhere around 1220 and was purchased by a man who would one day become Sultan. But unfortunately just as King Louis IX of France had assembled a crusader army to invade, the Sultan up and died. Inconvenient or what! Shajar then decided the best course of action was to pretend the Sultan was still alive issuing decrees under his name. She disposed of the Sul…[Read more]
It’s not the football, it’s the tribalism. Football (or any pack culture) gives halfwits anonymity, with a crowd to hide in, and it gives them an excuse to indulge in things they’d never dream of doing alone.
Unusual for all those sides to be poor at the same time- and they were poor, none of the results are a shock when current form taken into account.
Brazil, France, Uruguay and Belgium all still in though. But all in the other half of the draw. Losing to Belgium looking like a very good move now…
You really don’t have to spend a lot of money. When I had metatarsalgia it was caused by overpronation when I walk which was putting an unnatural amount of load on the balls of my feet when I walked or ran. What helped me was wearing some orthopedic insoles that corrected overpronation. Within around 2 weeks my ball of foot pain was all gone. I didn’t spend that much money I just picked up a £9.99 pair of arch support online.
It was a nothing game. Why risk bookings or injuries.
no side wants to lose but there was no real advantage to winning. It was a chance for squad players to make a case and they didn’t. I don’t buy the momentum argument as it was a different team out there.
it all starts again now. Columbia is a decent team but plays well and we will beat them especially without James if he’s out.
Its partly our national obsession with the underdog and being jolly good sports.
I heard on the radio that in German schools sport is taught that winning is all that matters at all costs whereas we know that here we have a thing about the taking part, best efforts and everyone’s a winner etc. which is a bit rubbish but deeply ingrained in the culture.
I’m generalising of course, but you get my drift.
Glad I did watch the Argentina Nigeria game….fantastic match. Felt a bit sorry for Nigeria, they play some great football.
How embarrassing is the cheating Argentinian Gazza? Unveils a flag of himself, swears at opposing fans, falls asleep then gets led away by doctors…probably a bit too late but the man needs help!
Some interesting games today…Brazil Serbia and Germany S. Korea would be amazing if Brazil and Germany failed to qualify.
Loving this world cup!!!
What did everyone think of the England game last night?
Unfortunately, in my opinion, they’re missing a lot of quality and inspiration.
No Beardsley, Waddle, Gascogne, Lineker, Platt. 1996 was the last time we had a side capable of winning it and Baddiel and Skinners song no longer rhymes.
Because you can only pick 11 men at a time. There just isn’t the passion for team sports in China from what I have seen and you need that passion to create the conditions where talented players can get to the top. It is no use having someone who makes Ronaldo look like a saturday morning part-timer if he spends his entire life assembling iPhones and contemplating suicide. Can’t say for India as I haven’t spent much time there but Cricket and Kabaddi seem to take the place of football there.
England could do ok.
I wouldn’t be shocked if we made the quarters.
You never know. There’s no super dominant team this year so it’s pretty open. I’d love for Messi to show how good he is but if he doesn’t play well Argentina will struggle.
Germany are Germany so you have to fancy them.
I’m just hoping England play without fear. They have a group they should get out of and have a good path to the quarters.
Uruguay didn’t start too well yesterday but they’ve got good players up top. I’d love to see a good upset and one of the smaller teams to get a long way.
Thanks for all the replies. All really helpful.
Think I’m going to hire a concept 2 for a few months to see how I go. My partner is skeptical about me keeping it up (I held my tongue over his cross trainer gathering dust in the spare room).
Good points raised about technique and warm ups. I’ve only had 5 goes on a machine and the resident gym instructor gave me a 5 min demo so will need to read up on that.
Ah ok that’s interesting. So you wouldn’t recommend water one? I was tempted as they are advertised as being quieter.
I really enjoyed the times I used the machine on holiday. I generally hate all gym equipment as I get bored but having to focus on technique really helps.
I’m thinking of buying a rowing machine to help maintain fitness.
Used to be super fit, not so much anymore
I hate the gym and the nearest decent one is half an hour away anyway.
Whilst on holiday I tried out all the equipment and I liked rowing. The gym had a concept 2 air rower. These are very expensive!
Has anybody got any recommendations on which model to buy? Air or water?
There seem to be a lot of second hand ones on fb, gumtree etc. Ranging from £20 up to £900 for the Concept2 & water rowers.
Do you get what you pay for? Should I save up for a decent model?
