42nd International Children's Games

Thursday, July 10, 2008 - Through 7/15/08
San Francisco, Calif.

In July 2008, the world will gather for a celebration of friendship and sport with 1,500 young athletes from 100 cities representing 50 countries and 6 continents.  San Francisco will host the 42nd International Children’s Games, which consists of competitions in eight sports.

The International Children’s Games were founded in 1968 by Slovenian professor Metod Klemenc to promote peace and friendship through sports. In the inaugural games, nine European cities met for a one-day competition and cultural exchange. From these humble beginnings, the International Children’s Games has grown into a global competition and cultural festival with participation from more than 1,000 athletes and 50 countries each year. Today, the International Children’s Games is the largest multi-sport international youth games and is a recognized member of the International Olympic Committee.
